Apple says, let’s make music DRM-free

Steve Jobs now favors having online music available with no copyright protection and is urging record companies to support this.

This could be the the bginning of the end for DRM and all the other noxious protection schemes that don’t work. Let’s hope so!

Reports and news feeds from Latin America’s upsurges

Aside from the newspaper I write for, Green Left Weekly, the major resource for reports on the Venezuelan revolution is Venezuela Analysis. Unfortunately if you read what the web has to offer via news feeds, you haven’t been able to get one from Venezuela Analysis — until now. But by using FeedYes I’ve created one:

It will also appear on the Venezuela Analysis site shortly — so I’m doing my bit for the rev.

Also, in case I haven’t mentioned it previously in this forum, Fred Fuentes here in Australia runs an excellent blog dedicated to news from Bolivia. It is always up to date with reports and translations: Bolivia Rising.

Trading carbon credits

Connecticut has a pioneering plan to cut greenhouse gases by creating a cap on carbon emissions that decreases each year, then creating a market to buy and sell them. The theory is that the more emissions a power plant makes, the more it costs them, so it behooves to clean up their act and thus save money.

The Hartford Courant explains how this works, then points out a major flaw in the plan. There’s no allowance for power plants buying dirty power from outside their trading zone, then re-selling it. Also, a carbon credits market could easily just make power generation more expensive without any real lowering of emissions.

Instead, what’s needed are mandatory federally mandated (and enforced) emissions limits.

What a war against Iran would mean

Scenarios and thoughts on what a US/Israel war against Iran would mean. That the neocons are using the same tactics they used in the Iram war buildup (lies, distortion, and demonization) in their delusion they expect a different result.

Only an organized militant people’s movement can stop this. Congress is just now getting around to thinking maybe they shouldn’t have so pliantly signed onto the wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran isn’t something they are even thinking about with yet.

So we the people need to do it for them.

The “icebox of Connecticut” is warming

Friday was the first appreciable snow all year. Maple syrup production is becoming erratic while poison ivy is flourishing.

Just more unmistakable signs of global warming.
