Geography of Nowhere

Clusterfuck Nation details how over-reliance on cars created sterile towns with the same stores everywhere, why Martha Stewart was the logical result of this, and how that same over-reliance on cars helped create and will help destroy the housing bubble.

Unprotected PC

In a test an unprotected PC with no antivirus program or firewall was infected in eight seconds. Within five minutes CPU usage was 100% due to downloaded spyware, and in 30 minutes it had crashed.

This is on a Windows-based PC. This would not happen with Linux or a Mac which don’t even need firewalls.

If you have a router, many of these attacks would be stopped, so the test is a bit theoretical, but still, it’s getting ugly out there.

California to ban sale of incandescent light bulbs?

lightbulb.gif

A California legislator proposes banning sale of incandescent light bulbs by 2012. This, coupled with the Wal-Mart plan to sell 100 million compact fluorescent bulbs by 2008 would give the CFL and LED bulb markets a gigantic boost while saving huge amounts of energy as well.

Traditional lights are cheaper, put out better light, and can be put place the newer bulbs can’t. But given a mass push to the new technologies, then those problems can no doubt be overcome.

If we are serious about stopping global warming, then these are the directions we have to go towards, doing more with less energy as old technologies are replaced by better, more efficient ones.
