Climate change?

Friends who live in on Vancouver Island in Canada tell me they just had a major blizzard, this in an area that supposedly “never gets snow.” Their power and phones were out for a couple of days, and more snow is coming. Yikes.

So, since they know Sue and I are moving to Connecticut, they ask, are you sure you want to move back into such weather?

Well, yes. New Englanders have lots of experience dealing with snow, plus temperatures never get to 119 in Connecticut, and traffic jams there are minor compared to the never-ending L.A. gridlock. Besides, as my dad, a life-long New Englander recently commented when I asked what winter is like there now, “It hardly ever gets below zero any more.”

Since winters are warmer there now, temperatures hover around freezing when there’s a storm. This means snow turns to rain, back to snow, causing ice to form on power lines, which then snap.

Seattle just had snow too, as well as record-breaking deluges of rain this month.

Climate change, anyone? Because, with global warming happening, some areas will indeed get warmer but others will get colder.

As well they should be.

The nurse just stood there and did nothing.

Britain, dead spies, and oil

Litvinenko is dead, yet Britain needs Russian oil. Plus ultra-wealthy oligarchs have already moved there, buying large amounts of real estate, etc.

So Britain is being “cautious” in their response to the murder.

Wheels within wheels, plots and subplots, it’s hard for an outsider to know what’s going on.

For example, in Sri Lanka, it’s Tamils vs. Sinhalese, right? Well, maybe not.

Many years ago, a British peace worker told me something I found shocking at the time: “All the Tamil people really want is not to be a pawn in Sinhala politics.” The more I have watched, the more I understand. The real conflict here is not between the Sinhalese and the Tamils. It is within the Sinhalese. And right now, the hardliners are winning.

So, that kind of process might be happening in Britain too. What appears to be the obvious answer may be not what’s happening at all.

An idea whose time has come

Black leaders, including Jesse Jackson, say it’s time for everyone, including the entertainment business and rappers, to stop using the “n-word.”

“We want to give our ancestors a present,” Jackson said at a news conference. “Dignity over degradation.”

Airport security baggie requirements

Not just any baggie will do when going through airport security. Oh no. It must be a Ziploc baggie, no other brand is allowable.

(I am not making this up…)
