Saudis allege torture in Guantanamo deaths

The reported suicides of two Saudi detainees at Guantanamo Bay intensified Saudi anger at the camp, drawing questions Sunday about whether the men really killed themselves or were driven to it by torture.

That Dubya, he’s even managing to turn once-faithful allies against the US. Were the prisoners tortured? Why have they never been tried or even allowed to see a lawyer? Does that not make a mockery of the Constitution, of the freedom and democracy that the neocons pretend they want to spread.

Forget Congress. They are deadwood, asleep at the wheel, complicit in the tortures.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said he would like to see the detainees’ cases judged more quickly.

“Where we have evidence they ought to be tried, and if convicted they ought to be sentenced,” Sen. Arlen Specter (news, bio, voting record), R-Pa., said on CNN’s “Late Edition.”

He said that without charges, many of the prisoners are “just out there in limbo, and that creates a very difficult situation.”

Gosh Arlen, maybe if you and the rest of the Senate had gotten off your dead millionaire asses and actually done something about it years ago, then the rest of the planet wouldn’t now increasingly be viewing the US as a pariah nation. That’s what being a “public servant” means, serving the public interest. Maybe you should look it up in a high school civics textbook so you can refresh yourself about the concept. But I’m sure you’ve got a fundraiser to go to, so it’ll have to wait, right?

Co-opting the power

In an era where the image of Che is on t-shirts made in Third World sweatshops and military contingents participate in Martin Luther King Day parades, the following is as true as ever.

During the lifetime of great revolutionaries, the oppressing classes constantly hounded them, received their theories with the most savage malice, the most furious hatred and the most unscrupulous campaigns of lies and slander. After their death, attempts are made to convert them into harmless icons, to canonize them, so to say, and to hallow their names to a certain extent for the “consolation” of the oppressed classes and with the object of duping the latter, while at the same time robbing the revolutionary theory of its substance, blunting its revolutionary edge and vulgarizing it.

This is a great idea. Short cords that plug into a power strip, allowing you to have transformers in all outlets on the strip. Cyberguys has a five-pack for $8.95.
