Officers may be charged in Haditha killings

Military sources told ABC News that there are likely to be charges filed against officers up the chain of command in connection with the killing of 24 civilians by U.S. Marines in Haditha, Iraq, in November 2005.

Those who could be charged include senior officers who were not on the scene at the time of the killing but should have known something wrong had happened and done something about it.

Today the White House confirmed that it was nearly three months after the Haditha killings that an investigation began, only after Time Magazine showed a video to a military spokesman.

In other words, the military only launched an investigation after they knew mainstream media had evidence. Time originally thought it was al Qaida propaganda, but that caused the military to start an investigation. Some in the military, it is clear, want no part of a coverup and are genuinely revolted by what they see as a desecration of their core values. Others, of course, participated in massacre and in the coverup.

Until then, the military insisted the civilians in Haditha had been killed by a roadside bomb.

But the video showed a bloody scene that suggested otherwise and prompted officials to launch a preliminary investigation into what happened.

“Prompted?” Try “forced” - the military was forced to launch an investigation even though they’d been covering up all along. And they would still be doing so if they could. But the videos, which were originally released by an Iraqi Human Rights group, are too damning for that, as witness at least one prominent Republican member of Congress saying what happened was an “atrocity.”

Little bird

The cats brought in a baby bird last night about midnight. It looked dead, so I wrapped it and put in in the trash. Come 3 AM, it started squealing. We thought it was another bird, and went looking for it several times. Finally it dawned on us it was the first bird, which was still in the wastebasket.

The little guy got slightly chomped, but should survive. We’ll find a rescue place for it.

So, we were up several times unexpectedly last night, are a bit sleepy. It occurs to me, what if this was in Iraq, and rather than a mangled bird, the house next door had been splattered by machine gun fire or it was an uncle lying on the floor who had been shot.

Because that’s what Iraqis deal with on a daily basis now, in a war without purpose, with the invaders apparently having gone insane, and no end in sight.

Norton ‘Security’..?

As mentioned previously I’m moving to Panda Software Platinum Security Suite from ZoneAlarm and Norton (we have four computers.)

One reason from moving was that Norton is increasingly braindead. How brain dead? On one PC, the Norton taskbar icon said Norton Antivirus wasn’t working correctly. If you opened the program, it said it was working. Gosh, thanks for being so helpful.

But it gets worse. On another PC, Windows Update wasn’t always installing new updates. Finally, I called Microsoft. They walked me through how to boot with no non-Windows programs loaded. The update then worked. Yesterday, another Windows Update failed.

Today, I deinstalled Norton, installed Panda, and you guessed it, Windows Update worked perfectly on the precise update it failed on when Norton was installed. A ’security’ program that blocks Windows Update is dangerous. I’m glad it’s off my system. Did I mentioned after deinstalling, it still insisted on trying to load something that locked up the entire system, requiring a cold boot?

By contrast, ZoneAlarm deinstalled quickly with no problem. While it gets high ratings, it pops up way too many warnings on things it should know better about. Yes, it once warned that Windows Update was doing something suspicious. I’m a hardened vet, I know to ignore such rubbish. But, what about Grandma who panics and then disables Windows Update because ZoneAlarm scared her?

Panda, on the other hand, just sits there quietly and gets the job done. Which is what a security program should do.
