Podcast: Exclusive video from New Orleans

This was filmed by Gloria La Riva of the ANSWER Coalition who was there last week. She talks with people who somehow survived, who ask ‘where the Hell was the help?’, and interviews a group of survivors who banded together and saved 300 others.

We don’t need no stinkin’ Constitution

The Shredding of Liberty.

AP: Court: ‘Dirty Bomb’ Suspect Can Be Held. A federal appeals court Friday sided with the Bush administration and reversed a judge’s order that the government either charge or free “dirty bomb” suspect Jose Padilla. The three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that the president has the authority to detain a U.S. citizen closely associated with al-Qaida.

The court’s ruling says Congress had the power to give the president dictatorial powers — to shred the Constitution at a whim and deny all rights to someone suspected of being a bad guy.

The judge who wrote this awful decision is on Bush’s short list for the Supreme Court. John Roberts, the likely next chief justice, has written at least one ruling that cedes dictatorial powers to the president.

Where is Congress? The Republicans, who once thought liberty was worth preserving, are applauding. The Democrats, who should be fighting for liberty, are simple cowards.

I fear for my country today.

FEMA director Michael Brown relieved of hurricane responsibilities

A small first step. Note that he still is head of FEMA. The Bushies, as usual, are doing as little as possible because, of course, they never admit they are wrong.

And Brown, um, stretched the truth on his resume. Twice. And the White House was just clueless about this and didn’t even verify what the resume said?

Black mold

Of the many types of mold, black mold is the most toxic. It needs moisture to grow, and in the post-flood areas, it’s been doing just that.

Others, like Calder, discovered spots of green and black mold rapidly claiming their furniture and walls.

A friend called Edwards a few days ago to report
black mold on houses in a neighborhood near her house.

What is Black Mold?

“Black Mold” is a term commonly used to describe a slimy, greenish-black substance which can result in serious health risk.

Spores from dried mold are very dangerous and should be cleaned with caution. You should never scrape or scratch at dried mold as the spores would then be released into the air and pose an inhalation risk. A respiratory mask and eye protection are necessary and adequate clothing to prevent skin contact is recommended.

An infested area of over 2ft is considered a “heavily infested” area and professional help should be consulted. Mold problems resulting from flooding should also be managed professionally to avoid possible health risk.

If they knock down buildings that have dried black mold, the spores will spread everywhere. Same thing if a water-damaged building simply collapses. The clean-up job here is of a staggering magnitude.

Class war

From Daily Kos

Republican Moral “Values”. Republican Congressman Baker finds the “silver lining”:

Rep. Baker of Baton Rouge is overheard telling lobbyists: “We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn’t do it, but God did.”

The Pat Robertson School of “Values.”

Have I told you lately that Republican politicians are despicable? It can not be said enough.

Update [2005-9-9 11:38:41 by Armando]: See booman tribune for details on Baker’s lobbyist pals and what they might want for New Orleans.

Next time you hear a Republican whine on TV that those horrible lefties are bringing up issues of class and race, remember this stomach-turning Republican attack on the poor and people of color.

Hunger strikers pledge to die in Guantánamo

More than 200 detainees in Guantánamo Bay are in their fifth week of a hunger strike, the Guardian has been told.

Statements from prisoners in the camp which were declassified by the US
government on Wednesday reveal that the men are starving themselves in
protest at the conditions in the camp and at their alleged maltreatment
- including desecration of the Qur’an - by American guards.
