Congressman sold home — and could pay dearly

Rep. Cunningham faces criminal probes after a high-price sale to a military contractor.

Cunningham, 63, a former Navy fighter pilot who shot down five MIGs during the Vietnam War and was a role model for Tom Cruise in the movie “Top Gun,” is being investigated by the FBI and other federal agencies for selling his house in November 2003 to a military contractor for what may have been an inflated price.

Sue, a forensic accountant, says this is a dumb way to take a bribe, too traceable. If you’re going to take a bribe, leave no paper trail, with house sales being among the most documented of transactions.

Military using direct marketer to get data on students for recruiters

With the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan making it increasingly hard for the U.S. military to fill its ranks with recruits, the Pentagon has hired an outside marketing firm to help compile an extensive database about teenagers and college students that the military services could use to target potential enlistees.

The initiative, which privacy groups call an unwarranted government intrusion into private life, will compile detailed information about high school students ages 16 to 18, all college students, and Selective Service System registrants. The collected information will include Social Security numbers, e-mail addresses, grade-point averages and ethnicities.

Hey kids, now you can get spam from the Pentagon!
