The center did not hold in Northern Ireland

Nobel Peace Prize laureate David Trimble and other moderates went down to defeat Friday while hard-line parties on both sides of the Protestant and Catholic divide claimed victory in Northern Ireland’s hotly fought elections to the British Parliament.

Unite Here wins major victory

The Beverly Hilton signs pact that ends next year, a key concession for Unite Here, which wants contracts nationwide to expire at the same time.


The Beverly Hilton was the first LA chain to sign. Others will no doubt follow. Unite Here fought long and hard for this. They want all their contracts to expire at once, something which would enable them to call nationwide strikes.

Ratzinger begins the purges

Editor of leading Jesuit Weekly resigns over conflict with Vatican



The editor of the Jesuit weekly America is leaving the magazine after the Vatican received complaints about articles he published on touchy issues such as same-sex marriages and stem cell research, Jesuit officials said Friday .


The Vatican has had a sometimes tense relationship with the Jesuits, some of whose members in the past have questioned papal pronouncements on birth control, priestly celibacy and the ban on women priests.


The Jesuits with their independent, liberal-ways were targets of the previous Pope and now of current Pope too.  Jesuits emphasize critical thinking, something the conservatives abhore. Ratzingers had targeted them long before any supposed “compaints.”

L.A. today - Unite to Defeat the Bush Program!

On May 7, activists from all neighborhoods and communities in the LA area will come together at the historic Sunset Hall Retirement Home to discuss the issues and share ideas so we can build a movement to stop the right wing in its tracks. The May 7 meeting will also serve as a mobilizing session for a People’s Assembly, Community Fair and Rally on Saturday, May 21 in Pershing Square.


The People’s Assembly will bring together individuals, community leaders, clergy, organizations, labor unions and more to fight against war and racism and defend social services in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. There will be speakers, cultural performances and art installations, and booths and tables brought by all progressive organizations that want to participate. Join the people’s fight against the Bush program!
