The rumor was just that

From respected hip hop journalist Davey D. on a letter circulating warning of  Black-Brown violence in L.A. on Cinco de Mayo (today)

For the most part, the letter appears to be a hoax. Folks who work closely with the gangs down here have not heard of any craziness jumping off, but because the letter has been so widely circulated, it has led to some town hall meetings and increased police presence on all the high school campuses down here.

This on going beef between black and brown is not happening in vacuum and seems to be sparking off in cities with large minority populations with increasing regularity. I caught up with LA rapper Kam not to long ago who spoke on the seriousness of this situation.

He noted that he spends a lot of time working to heal any rifts which he says starts from the racial segregation and divide and conquer techniques used in the California prisons. He noted that this tactic has now spilled out onto the streets and is starting to impact everyday folks buy into these rumors. Kam concluded as he did in his landmark record ‘Keep the Peace’ which addresses this issue that all of us are going to have to be aware of the outside forces that continuously work to keep large groups of people divided and separated. Black and brown unity becomes threatening to some who wish to maintain power and see the large numbers that both groups have as a threat to everything from job security to political outcomes on key issues.

This latest scenario involving the letter warning Black kids to not wear white t-shirts on Cinco De Mayo was a deliberate attempt to create drama where there wasn’t any.

All war all the time

Could the US military handle another war?

Media reports in the US and around the world have taken note of a new classified report from the top US military adviser, which indicates that the US military’s current commitments overseas may prevent it from adequately fighting future conflicts.

Why not STOP fighting these lunatic wars for empire and dominance instead of fretting how we can’t fight even more of them simultaneously.

Some major US newspapers connected the report to lagging recruitment numbers as further evidence of strain on the military.

So they don’t have enough personnel. Is that a draft I feel? Was the real reason for this report to test the waters for the reinstatement of the draft?

A draft, of course, would be the biggest organizing opportuinity the left has had in decades.

Passports

I’ll be in Montreal on business soon and was told that while a passport isn’t required, having one helps on the Canadian side if you are there on business and will most especially help upon returning to the States. Since, in this post 9/11 hysteria, I do wish to see my wife again, off I went to get my passport renewed.

The Post Office can process passport requests, but even an expedited request takes two weeks, which was more time than I had.

After booking the flight on Expedia, up popped a screen saying, should I need a passport quickly, to clickthrough to CIBT.com, who can process at passports overnight. They must have some kind of serious ju-ju with Customs, because they did just that - a 24 hr turnaround after I overnighted the documents to their Florida office. Go figure.

In the past, business travelers to Canada may have fibbed, saying they were on there on vacation in order to speed their entrance into the country. In the current climate lying to Customs, any Customs, is seriously stupid. Don’t even think of doing it with US Customs, it’s a felony, and a federal one at that.

Activists who have been to countries like Iraq, North Korea, Afghanistan, and Cuba say that upon entry, those countries ask if you want your passport stamped. You can say no. Uncle Sam didn’t used to check where you’ve been. Those days are gone. So, if you go to Cuba, come back with an unstamped passport showing no Cuba entry, then lie about it when asked where you went, well, if they can prove you are lying, you may be seriously phucked.

So,when it comes to Customs, be a Boy Scout. Always tell the truth.
