US ‘erodes’ global human rights


Violations of human rights by the US are undermining international law and eroding its role on the world stage, a leading campaign group says.


Human Rights Watch says the US can no longer claim to defend human rights abroad if it practises abuses itself.


The US has become the rogue nation the Bushies claim is threatening us so much that they forced, forced they tell us, to curtail all those pesky civil rights and shred that annoying Constitution.

Parkinson’s ‘could be linked to pesticides’

Years of research into Parkinson’s has not discovered what causes nerve cells to die in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra. Ageing is a prime factor but a combination of genes and pollutants or pesticides is believed to be the trigger.


My grandfather died a long, lingering death from Parkinson’s, imprisoned in a crippled body and unable to communicate but with an apparently alert and healthy mind. And pesticides could have been a major factor? Yow.

Hotel strike during DC inauguration?

DC hotels, workers break off talks



Contract talks between the local hotel union and 14 large D.C. hotels ended abruptly last night as negotiators for the hotels refused to increase their pay and benefits offer, complicating efforts to avoid a strike before the presidential inauguration next week. Unite Here Local 25 officials have said they will take action, possibly including a strike, if there is no new contract by Saturday.


Hmm, with huge anti-Bush demos in the streets plus a hotel strike, things could get downright interesting come Jan. 20.
