Finally

The soutwest and west are finally getting decent amount of rain. Los Angeles currently is being pummeled by monsoons. Unfortunately, LA has no place to store this water so most of it just flows out to sea.

Colorado Water

Recent snowfall is building hopes that the drought is easing in the Colorado River Basin, according to this short article from the Denver Post [January 9, 2005, "Snowfall lifts forecasters' hopes for Colorado River"]. From the article, “Forecasters now predict the river will receive 98 percent of its normal amount of water this year, in part because of a good start to the winter storm season.”

PS to LA. The big thunderstorm that hit Maui last night will probably hit LA in a few days. This is known as the Pineapple Express.

How tsunami warning buoys work

An engineer explained to me that regular waves are short, while a tsunami wave can be a mile or more long. Tsunami warning buoys monitor the lengh, the wavelength of the wave, and should a very long wave come by, the buoy signals a satellite, which then relays the warning message. Hawaii, where I am now, did get hit by a tsunami in Hilo in 1946, and now has warning buoys.

The length of the wave also accounts for its’ destructiveness. A normal wave hits, then quickly recedes. A mile long tsunami wave sends that wall of water for a very long time before it finally is spent.

Your move, George

From Left i on the News

The Association of Muslim Scholars throws an unexpected check into the deadly serious game being played  in Iraq:

Iraq’s most influential Sunni group will abandon its call for a boycott of Jan. 30 elections if the United States gives a timetable for withdrawing multinational forces, a spokesman for the group said Sunday.”

Very nicely done.
