Classic Doublespeak
Doublespeak is “language deliberately constructed to disguise its actual meaning.” Orwell called them words “deliberately constructed for political purposes: words, that is to say, which not only had in every case a political implication, but were intended to impose a desirable mental attitude upon the person using them.”
And the following, indeed, is Doublespeak –
Haiti’s new premier said Friday that ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide’s planned Caribbean trip could threaten efforts to stabilize a country still in turmoil two weeks after the leader left amid a popular rebellion.
What a bunch of hooey! Aristide didn’t leave, he was forced out in a US-led coup d’etat. The rebellion was hardly “popular” as many were, and still are fighting, for Aristide. Worse, this thinly disguised White House propaganda, er, press release masquerading as a legitimate news story manages to completely ignore the obvious – that Haiti is in turmoil now precisely *because* Aristide was forced out.
