Spy scandal pressures Bush

Spy scandal pressures Bush

There is a clear sense in this most political of cities that this could get very nasty for the Bush administration.

Just how nasty probably depends on the extent of White House involvement in the leaking of the identity of Joe Wilson’s wife.

Joe Wilson wrote an article criticizing the Bush Administration. Someone retaliated by leaking that his wife is a CIA agent. This is a felony as well as being a stupid petty spiteful act.

So far though, White House officials are insisting neither the president nor his closest political adviser Karl Rove had anything to do with it.

Uh, huh. I believe them, don’t you?

But both the Washington media and the president’s political opponents are sensing blood.

And when the DC sharks smell blood in the water they attack.

Huffington, Camejo leaning towards hold…

Huffington, Camejo leaning towards hold your nose and vote for Cruz

Green Party candidate Peter Camejo was the first to broach the subject. On Saturday, he said he had heard enough supporters voice worries about an Arnold Schwarzenegger governorship that he issued a statement saying he “will not condemn those voters who feel forced to vote for a Democrat like Cruz Bustamante.”

A spokesman for independent Arianna Huffington on Monday also left the door open to her exiting the race, while not necessarily endorsing Bustamante. Although Huffington is “greatly disappointed” with the lieutenant governor’s campaign, the aide said she thinks a Gov. Schwarzenegger would be a “disaster.”

New law passed to block suicide onstage

The St. Petersburg city council passed a law Monday designed to scuttle a rock group’s plans to feature an onstage suicide.

The hard-rock band Hell on Earth had said that a suicide by a terminally ill person would take place during a concert Saturday to raise awareness of right-to-die issues

In response, the city council met Monday morning to unanimously approve an emergency ordinance making it illegal to conduct a suicide for commercial or entertainment purposes.

What a bunch of grumps.

End the Occupation march &…

End the Occupation march & rally in Hollywood on Sunday

Except for forgetting my cell phone so I couldn’t
camblog photos, the End the Occupation march and rally in Hollywood was amazing, inspiring (and exhausting).

Several thousand people came. It was spirited and fun, and one of many of the worldwide peace marches in
over 40 countries over the weekend.

I was up front with the sound truck that led the
march, staying in comunication with other parts of the march via
walkie-talkies. We stopped the march a few times when the back of the march radioed that LAPD was riding motorcycles on the sidewalks and ordering people off them. The National Lawyers Guild, as always, spoke with police, alerting them that anyone can walk on a sidewalk anytime without permission from police. After we got that cleared up the march
continued!

The rally was at Hollywood & Highland, smack in the middle of upscale Hollywood tourist / shopping area. Some shopowners had been fearful roving bands of crazed peaceniks would create mischief, but fortunately for Capitalism, no such catastrophe ocurred. Well, one young man started dancing while carrying two rally posters, and police decided the pieces of wood attached to the sign
were dangerous weapons and demanded he give them to them. There are, in
fact, laws governing how thick poster sticks can be, however his were
well under the limit. There was a bit of a scuffle and last I heard police were questioning him but hadn’t yet arrested him while, you guessed it, the National Lawyers Guild was standing by and monitoring the situation. One of them opined to me this could be a lawsuit if they arrested him.

The high point of the rally was when the extraordinarily eloquent Fernando Suarez addressed the crowd. His son was killed in Iraq, and he has become a tireless spokesperson for ending the war now. The top photo shows him on the left, next to him is a translator, seated to the far right is Ron Kovic. Behind him, out of
view, stood 25 members of Military Families Speak Out, an organization of 1,000 families with children in Iraq who oppose the war. He spoke with great passion and feeling about how this insane war must be ended before more innocents die because the country was lied to by the President.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Ron Kovic were among the other speakers, and the rally made the AP wire, which means the story goes everywhere.

SF Indymedia has photos from the San Francisco and Fresno demos.

Jurassic Pot Plants Available Soon

Not that kind of pot… Via: BBC News

The Wollemi Pine, a plant from Jurassic times which survived in a single isolated Australian grove, is set for an amazing comeback.

In 2005, small plants cultivated from the tree once thought to have gone extinct will go on sale to the public.

The discovery of the pine in 1994 caused a scientific sensation, and prompted the Australian Government to protect the site where it was growing.

Demo today in Hollywood!

Demo today in Hollywood!

I’ll be at the demonstration site bright and early this morning (well ok, actually 9:45) to help organize for the End the Occupation march & rally in Hollywood. It’ll be an eight hour day, ending about 6 pm  after we finish tearing down the stage.

There may be counter-demonstrations by those upset by our use of the “P” word. That word being, of course, “Palestinians”. God forbid anyone should suggest they have a right to exist too…

I’ll be posting photos as they happen from my cell phone camera to my newly revamped camblog site at http://polizeros.textamerica.com. Check it out!

Justice probing White House leak…

Justice probing White House leak of CIA officer’s identity

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating charges that administration officials leaked the identity of an undercover intelligence officer to a journalist in July, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

Administration officials said CIA Director George Tenet sent a memo to the Justice Department raising questions about the alleged leak, which could mean prison time and a fine, the Post reported.

Golly, I’m sure Ashcroft will follow the facts wherever they go, aren’t you?? However Justice was asked by the CIA to investigate, and this is getting major press, so Maximum John. Do you suppose if Ashcroft is forced to indict one of his pals he will demand the maximum penalty like he’s ordered his prosecutors to do on all cases?

When the UN leaves, Baghdad…

When the UN leaves, Baghdad get bombed

From Baghdad Burning, a blog written by a young Iraqi woman in Baghdad

What is particularly disturbing is that the UN is pulling out some of its staff for security reasons… they pulled out a third tonight and others will be leaving in the next few days. Things are getting more and more frightening. My heart sinks every time the UN pulls out because that was how we used to gauge the political situation in the past: the UN is pulling out- we’re getting bombed.

Feds snooping on Scotch distilleries for fear of chemical weapons conversions. US Intelligence is closely monitoring Scotch whisky distilleries on the off-chance that they will be converted to chemical weapons factories.

For it has been revealed that Ursula, a spy with the US Defence Threat Reduction Agency - “Our mission to safeguard the US and its allies from weapons of mass destruction” - has been monitoring the island distillery.

Apparently, it takes just a “tweak” - her words - in the process of making whisky and Bruichladdich could be churning out chemical weapons.

“My son died because Bush…

“My son died because Bush lied.”

From the Guardian

The father of a soldier killed in Iraq accused President George Bush yesterday of being responsible for his son’s death.

Fernando Suarez, whose 20-year-old son, Jesus, was one of the first fatalities, said: “My son died because Bush lied.”
Mr Suarez, from Escondido, California, speaking at a press conference to publicise tomorrow’s anti-war demonstrations in eight US cities said that about 1,300 parents of troops stationed in Iraq were involved in a movement against the occupation. “It is time for these troops to come home,”

Suarez made the comments at a press conference held by ANSWER LA. It drew media from NBC, CBS, La Opinion, The Guardian, Swedish Radio, a large Japanese newspaper, City News, and others.
The buzz for the LA demo on Sunday is snowballing. The press conference was well-attended and made several local TV news shows as well as being reported in national and international media. And this is BEFORE the event!

Ominous news for Bush

Ominous news for Bush

Barely one-third of Arizona voters say they would give President Bush a second term, a statewide poll revealed Thursday.

Given that Arizona tilts heavily to the right, this is startling news indeed. Bush’s voter base is deserting him.

Looks like Dubya may well be be a one-term President like his daddy.

Poverty rises, income levels fall

In a report that offered fresh ammunition to critics of President Bush’s economic policy, the government said Friday that the nation’s median income fell nearly $500 in 2002 and the poverty rate climbed for a second straight year.

And no, more tax cuts for the wealthy is NOT the answer. Never was, never will be.

The California recall election and…

The California recall election and campaign contributions

If you’re wondering why Peter Camejo, the Green Party candidate for Governor in the California recall, has no ads running in print, TV or radio, it’s because he can’t afford it. The Green Party bans contributions from corporations and PACs, and strictly limits how much an individual can give. All well and noble, yet such underfunding makes running an effective statewide campaign beyond difficult in a state with 35 million people.

Recall Watch tracks the money contributed to the various recall campaigns. Camejo has raised just $49,000, compared to $777,000 for Huffington, 1.6 million for McClintock, 4.2 million for Bustamante, and 15.4 million for Schwarzenegger, of which 9.5 million comes from Schwarzenegger himself.

All this info, plus the names of contributors can be easily discovered using their handy advanced search page. There’s some fascinating info here, happy digging!

Wesley Clark says US plans call for invading seven countries

From reader Theologicus

The U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq was “a perfect example” of military domination while failing to achieve victory, retired general and Democratic presidential hopeful Wesley Clark wrote in a new book.

Clark, who joined the 2004 race last week, also said he learned in November 2001 that the Bush administration’s plan for invading Iraq and ousting President Saddam Hussein had been part of a broader five-year military campaign in seven countries that Washington accused of supporting terrorism.

Clark wrote that a senior military officer told him on a visit to the Pentagon in November 2001 that the U.S. was planning to go against Iraq but there was more to it. After Iraq, the plan called for targeting Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan.

The Right watching the Left

The Right watching the Left

CommieWatch, a right wing blog that thinks it knows what the Left is doing, is just as interested in the Josh Connole case as PoliZeros is! In fact, they linked to my photo of Josh and his lawyer at  a recent ANSWER meeting. Their speculations about Josh and ANSWER, however, border on ludicrous for anyone actually near the case. CommieWatch is part of, are you ready, Watchers of Weasels, a revolving group of blogs apparently dedicated to figuring out what the heck the Left is up to. It may just be my admitted biases but most of the Watchers, from my quick spin through their blogs, seem decidedly on the lame side. Not much substance.

CommieWatch is by far the best of them, and is at least intelligently written by Greg Yardley, a staff writer for David Howowitz’s hard right Center for the Study of Popular Culture. He says the blog is strictly personal but hey it sure seems like a front organization to me. (Note: this is my little jest, as he says ANSWER is a front..)

Ah, the things I discover by reading the referrer logs for PoliZeros! (Referrer logs track where hits for a website come from)

Bushies looking to start more…

Bushies looking to start more wars?

The Bushies are targetting Syria and Iran yet again. They’ve lied so much and so often it is, um, difficult to believe them when they imply we face Yet More Monstrous Threats from the Middle East.

The Air Force has charged Senior Airman Ahmad Al-Halabi with spying and trying to pass classified information about detainees to contacts in Syria.

This just a few days after The Bush Administration growled at Syria for something, I forget precisely what. This seems llike their usual beating the drums for war.

US President George W Bush has condemned Iran over its nuclear programme, as reports say United Nations nuclear inspectors have found traces of highly-enriched weapons-grade uranium at a second site in the country.

Just like the WMDs no doubt…

Annan orders some UN staff out of Iraq

With the bloodshed mounting in Iraq, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan ordered some UN staff to leave the country temporarily, his spokesman said.

The announcement came as a blow as the United States and anti-war opponents like France debate how great a role the United Nations should have in helping to rebuild the war-torn country.

In the past day or so, a member of the ruling council was assassinated, a NBC hotel was bombed, and US soldiers have been killed. The attacks are escalating both in quantity and ferocity.

27 Israeli Pilots refuse to participate in Palestine raids

This is huge. Open rebellion coming from the elite of Israel, air force pilots.

About 27 Israeli reserve and active pilots, including a Brigadier General, sent a signed petition to the Israeli Air Force Commander, in which they refused to fly in any mission over the Palestinian territories.

They said, “We, who have been educated to love the state of Israel … refuse to take part in air force attacks in civilian population centers. We … refuse to continue harming innocent civilians.”
