L.A Times poll shows Bustamante…

L.A Times poll shows Bustamante way ahead of Schwarzenegger

Cruz has 35% followed by Arnold at 22%.

Other mainstream Republicans include McClintock at 12%, Ueberroth 7%, and Simon (who just dropped out) 6%. So, technically, if they all dropped out, Schwarzenneger might pull ahead, however Ueberroth’s support is bi-partisan, and McClintock is the hard right candidate, I doubt he’ll withdraw.

I think people are seeing just how empty-headed Arnold’s campaign is. Combine that with his support of the anti-immigrant Prop 187, and you get an energized Latino electorate voting for Cruz.

“Occupy the Occupiers”

Ron Kovic, Westwood Federal Bldg, 8/22/03“Occupy the Occupiers”

Not On Our Name called a demonstration Friday night in Los Angeles at the Westwood Federal Building. Due to a tactical error on their part, the permit wasn’t issued until about a week before the event, which didn’t give them much time to organize hence the crowd was small.

However the L.A. Times ran two photos of it, and the speakers, music, and rappers got the message across. The top photo shows Ron Kovic, of Born On The Fourth of July fame, speaking.

I know Ron a bit from the various demos. He’s a friendly gentle man who believes we are living in historic times, and that we, the peace movement, can and will change the course of history. It’s always inspiring to hear him speak. He gives me hope.

Back in the Vietnam days, Ron helped start Vietnam Veterans Against the War, a group who played a major role in turning public opinion against the war. The media and right wing suddenly had little to say when Viet Vets like Ron, who lost the use of his legs in ’Nam, were suddenly on the front lines of the antiwar protests.  And 35 years later, he’s still at it.

The second photo is one of the Aztec Dancers, a group who appear at leftie and cultural events everywhere in L.A. and who, through their drumming and dancing, always get the crowd energized.

Bush tanking in the polls

Bush tanking in the polls

George W. Bush’s approval ratings continue to decline. His current approval rating of 53 percent is down 18 percent from April.

And for the first time since the question was initially asked last fall, more registered voters say they would not like to see him re-elected to another term as president (49 percent) than re-elected. Forty-four percent would favor giving Bush a second term; in April, 52 percent backed Bush for a second term and 38 percent did not.

Sixty-nine percent of Americans polled say they are very concerned (40 percent) or somewhat concerned (29 percent) that the United States will be bogged down for many years in Iraq without making much progress in achieving its goals.

Suddenly Bush looks very vulnerable. Let’s make him a one-term President like his daddy. We can do that by continuing to organize hard on the war, empahsizing the erosion of civil rights, and the deteriorating econony.
