Worldwide protests coming soon!

Worldwide protests coming soon!

Sep 25-27 will be a weekend of worldwide demonstrations against occupation and empire.

“The A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition expresses its solidarity with the call issued by the Arab progressive movement, the European peace movement and others who are holding activities timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the second Palestinian Intifada “

Here on the West Coast, demos will be held in Seattle, S.F., and L.A.

The Los Angeles march and rally is Sunday Sep 27, 1 pm in Hollywood. It was called by ANSWER LA, and many other groups are participating in the now-forming coalition.

Let’s make this one huge, folks!

Israeli parliament passes grotesque anti-Palestinian…

Israeli parliament passes grotesque anti-Palestinian law

“Israel’s parliament passed a measure Thursday that would force Palestinians who marry Israelis to live separate lives or move out of Israel. The government said the law was necessary to prevent terror attacks, but critics called it racist.”

When a country passes a law saying if people of a particular ethnicity marries someone of their ethnicity, they must leave the country if they want to live together, yeah, I’d call that racist - and stomach-turning, and sickening.

MC5 A True Testimonial to…

MC5 A True Testimonial to open in Hollywood

If you know who the MC5 were, no explanation is needed. MC5 The True Testimonial, the movie about them, is finally done. It opened in NYC recently to rave reviews and an opening night audience that went absolutely fucking nuts. Yes, the movie is that good, this from friends at the Bomp /Alive-Total Energy family of labels. They should know - they’ve released much excellent MC5 stuff over the years.

If you don’t know who they were, well they came out of Detroit in the late 60’s, mixing revolutionary politics and stupendously high  levels of rock and roll energy. Their first LP, Kick Out The Jams, remains one of the most ferocious, ass-kicking albums ever, rendered even more amazing by it being recorded live.

The movie opens in Hollywood, Fri Aug 15 7 pm at The ArcLight. Yes, I’ve already got tickets, they will go very fast, and I expect we’ll blow the roof off the place.

From guitarist Wayne Kramer’s mailing list: “Then come on over to the Knitting Factory. Wayne’s been invited to play the Opening night party with sets from Mike Watt & Nels Cline and Saccharine Trust. Plus some surprise guests…”

Remaining members Wayne Kramer, Dennis Thompson, and Michael Davis recently played together in London, for the first time since ‘72.  You better believe they still got it. Also, Kramer has released a series of excellent CDs over the past few years, “rock and roll for adults”, he once called it.

I just realized that, although I followed the MC5 since Day One, I never considered them rock stars, but more like compatriots. They were hounded by the FBI. Their manager John Sinclair got a long prison term for a tiny amount of pot (he didn”t serve the full term thankfully). They were the only band to attempt to play the ‘68 Democratic Convention in Chicago when the “police riot” happened.

During that time I was going to protests, getting tear-gassed, getting arrested. Kick Out The Jams was usually in the background somewhere. So no, I didn’t see them as rock stars. Fellow travelers was more like it.

Unocal will stand trial for…

Unocal will stand trial for human rights abuses

It’s been a long time coming but finally, a US judge ruled Unocal must stand trial for human rights abuses in Burma.

“The American oil giant Unocal must stand trial in California for alleged human rights abuses in Burma, a court has ruled.

A lawsuit, filed almost three years ago, accuses the company of allowing troops guarding one of its pipeline projects to rape, murder and enslave villagers.

Unocal is accused of being complicit in forced labour, rape and torture allegedly carried out by troops guarding the $1.2bn Yadana pipeline during its construction in the 1990s.

in documents released on Thursday, Los Angeles judge Victoria Chaney said: “Prior to its involvement in the pipeline project, Unocal had specific knowledge that the use of forced labour was likely and nevertheless chose to proceed.”

Smog, famine, swarms of locusts…

Smog, famine, swarms of locusts are also of proven benefit

“Some cutting-edge transportation experts have startling news: Traffic congestion isn’t entirely a bad thing. In fact, it’s a good sign. <and what planet are they from, may I ask?>

For what is congestion, these experts ask, but crowds lining up — whether shoulder to shoulder outside a movie theater or bumper to bumper on the road — to pursue activities with economic or social value?

“Congestion is a sign that a lot of good things are happening,” said Brian Taylor, director of UCLA’s Institute of Transportation Studies.”

Brian, you silly twit, if we spent less time driving, then we’d have more time to pursue those economic and social activities, now wouldn’t we?

For penace, you are sentenced to live in Lancaster and work in Santa Monica. Let’s see how sane you are after a month of 2 hour commutes each way. And yes, for you non-Angelenos reading this, some people here do commute that much, and through constantly traffic-clogged freeways.

What’s the answer? Two words. Mass transit.

Daniel Weintraub: It’s time for…

Daniel Weintraub: It’s time for the elites to quit all their whining

The people have called an election, and the political elites of both major parties hate it. So does big business and, for the most part, the media. But it’s amazing the level of ownership real people feel over the recall. It is something they have done in defiance of California’s ruling establishment”

And that is precisely why the recall is a political earthquake.
