Clueless in Iraq

Clueless in Iraq

The US may be occupying Iraq, however, beyond a supposed military “victory” they seem clueless what to do about the obvious and growing opposition.

Iraqis protest U.S., demand Islamic state

“Thousands of demonstrators poured into the streets of Baghdad after Friday prayers to protest the U.S. presence in Iraq and demand an Islamic state to take the place of Saddam Hussein’s secular government.”

The underground opposition grows

“What is amazing, at least to me, is the amount and strength of the opposition to the US already on the ground. The Shia and Sunni clerics, free of Saddam’s secret police and bolstered by armed militias, are already mobilizing, while the US is oblivious to the growing organization.”

Tim Robbins

Tim Robbins

Countering a Wave of Hate, excerpt of the speech given by actor Tim Robbins to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on April 15, 2003

“And in the midst of all this madness, where is the political opposition? Where have all the Democrats gone? Long time passing, long time ago? With apologies to Robert Byrd, I have to say it is pretty embarrassing to live in a country where a five-foot-one comedian has more guts than most politicians.

We need leaders, not pragmatists that cower before the spin zones of former entertainment journalists. We need leaders who understand the Constitution – Congressmen who don’t, in a moment of fear, abdicate their most important power, the right to declare war, to the executive branch.

And please, can we stop the Congressional sing-a-longs?”

Baseball Hall of fame apologizes for snubbing star Tim Robbins’s over war

“The US Baseball Hall of Fame president Friday apologized after he was caught in a media firestorm for publicly snubbing stars Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon over their opposition to the war in Iraq.”

They were forced to apologize primarily because so many sportswriters, many of whom disagree with Robbins about the war, loudly voiced their opposition to Hall of Fame, and their attack on freedom of speech.

Hey, weren’t they supposed to be dancing in the streets?

Baghdad protesters denounce ‘occupation’

Curse those ungrateful Iraqis! Here we went and bombed them back to Democracy and all they can do is demand we leave. How rude!

“Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Baghdad after Friday prayers, to protest against what they see as a foreign occupation of their country.

The marchers carried flags and banners saying “No to occupation” and demanding that the unity of Iraq be preserved.”

US has no legitmate right…

US has no legitmate right to Iraqi oil and lifting of sanctions must wait, say neighbours

“The US-led forces that invaded Iraq had no right to exploit its oil and UN sanctions on Iraq should end only when it has a legitimate government, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said on Saturday.

The reason the US wants sanctions immediately lifted, and the reason other countries want to wait is because the US has said they will use Iraq oil to pay for the “rebuilding” of the country, money which will go directly those US corporations like Halliburton and Betchtel who are waiting like pigs at the trough for the money.

“Speaking after a meeting of eight regional states on post-Saddam Hussein Iraq, he said the invading forces must reestablish security and withdraw as soon as possible, allowing Iraqis to form their own government.

The group of eight – including all six of Iraq’s neighbours – have been meeting in Saudi Arabia on a day marked by huge anti-American demonstrations throughout occupied Iraq.”
