That statue of Saddam the…

That statue of Saddam the US pulled down?

Few Iraqis were actually present. Instead, lots of US troops and tanks. Sure looked different on CNN, didn’t it? Especially sincwe they featured a closeup shot of the event whereas a distance photo clearly shows how few people were actually there.

Why the peace movement matters

Why the peace movement matters

Excerpt from ANSWER SF email

“The global movement that suddenly emerged in the past six months in opposition to Bush and the U.S. war drive is a singularly important development. People all over the world, in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, in the United States and in Europe marched in coordinated action. These movements have now defied borders and built an international voice of solidarity. Even the New York Times on February 17 referred to this movement as the second “superpower” in the world.

This movement represents the hopefulness of the planet that war, imperialism, oppression, racism and any form of colonialism can be overcome through the globalization of human solidarity.

It would be the most tragic and wasteful outcome if this movement - less than a year old - decided that its efforts had failed because Bush and the Pentagon proceeded with their slaughter in Iraq. The war on Iraq does not prove the failure of the anti-war movement.

If anything, the war on Iraq proves only that the economic, political and military authority in the United States is morally bankrupt. It is nurtured by a system that has become addicted to militarism and war.

The essential element in <our> struggle is to maintain and build the global movement  — the force that has always and can win against military and economic might.”

Human cloning ‘flawed’

Human cloning may never be possible because of a quirk of biology.

The obstacle appears to be something to do with the way genetic material is parcelled up as a cell splits into two during embryonic development. Cells end up with too much, or too little DNA, and cannot survive.

It suggests that attempts to clone other primates, even humans, may be doomed to failure.”

U.S.-backed Shiite cleric killed at shrine in Najaf.

“A prominent Islamic cleric, newly returned from exile and cooperating with the American forces that are nominally in control of this city, was killed today by an angry mob at one of Shiite Islam’s holiest shrines.”

Syria urges ‘end to occupation’

Syria urges ‘end to occupation’

“Syria has called for an end to the “occupation” of its neighbour, Iraq, in its first official response to the fall of Baghdad.”

Heck, they probably figure they’re locked in the US crosshairs anyway, so might as well speak out.

California prison guards get major raise, as state goes broke

California may be going broke, with many salaries being slashed. However prison guards are getting yet another pay raise.

In a bizarre coincidence,  the prison guards union has also donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Gov. Gray Davis’ election campaigns.

“California prison officers stand to receive a raise of as much as 7% on July 1, twice what negotiators for Gov. Gray Davis estimated when the governor agreed to a new contract last year.

The cost — $67 million more than anticipated — comes as the state struggles with a budget shortfall of as much as $35 billion, and as Davis calls on all state workers to accept deep pay cuts.”
