The good news is
Conservative Republicans want to dump Trent Lott.
The bad news is
They want to replace Lott with someone more conservative.
The zinger
If Lott resigns from the Senate,not just from the leadership, this makes it possible for Republican Senators Lincoln Chafee (RI), Olympia Snowe (Maine), Susan Collins (Maine) to leave the party, becoming Independents, as Jim Jeffords (VT) did, giving the Senate back to the Democrats.
Please note, these rogue Republican Senators are from New England, and are seriously opposed to the conservative Southerners running the party. Echoes of the Civil War, anyone?
