Army coup attempt in Venezuela…

Army coup attempt in Venezuela never gets started

Venezuela Stays Calm as Army Rejects Revolt Call.
Dissident Venezuelan military officers struggled on Wednesday to muster support for their call for a revolt against leftist President Hugo Chavez as the armed forces firmly rejected the idea of a rebellion.

bin Laden in Saudi Arabia?

bin Laden in Saudi Arabia?

DEBKAfile says bin Laden is in Saudi Arabia. So, given the source we assume that Israeli Intelligence certainly wants us to believe bin Laden is there - and that the story may even be credible. Certainly an explosive story, if true.

The long-lost al Qaeda leader, Saudi-born Osama bin Laden, is alive and in Saudi Arabia. He is believed to have landed secretly at the end of September, shortly before the latest upsurge of international terrorist attacks against the French oil tanker Limburg, the shooting of American Marines in Kuwait, the Bali bomb disaster. This exclusive information reached DEBKA from its most credible intelligence and counter-intelligence sources.

US sniper obession

US sniper obession

British media wonders what is going on here.

The United States will hold elections in two weeks. President George W Bush might have changed his position on whether regime change is necessary in Iraq.  And there have been new nuclear revelations about North Korea, a member of the Mr Bush’s dreaded “axis of evil”.

But all of these stories are buried under a mountain of US coverage of the serial sniper in the Washington region.

Steve Lopez of the LA Times points out this morning, this isn’t new - some people in the US deal with snipers and shootings as part of their daily life.

In another story in the Times today an immigrant from Liberia said

“In my country it was war and shooting every day, and every day an uprising,” he said. “Nobody knows who’s next. As we’re standing out here, we could be shot. You have to live your life.”

If the sniper stays on the run much longer, Richards said, his neighbors will get used to the dread. They will assimilate. “They’ll get tired of it,” he said. “They may be frightened today, but eventually they will have to come out again.”

Oh, this just in, Washington sniper not God, FBI confirms

Let’s be kind to our…

Let’s be kind to our poor businesses (say what?)

Lieberman Pledges To Be Business Candidate In 2004. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) “who said he is considering a run for the White House in 2004, attacked President Bush’s management of the economy… while portraying himself as a Democrat who will be kind to business,” the San Francisco Chronicle reports….

Well, call me a cranky Leftie, but isn’t the problem that we have been way too kind to business, letting them run rampant Enron-style, fleecing the public and their employees while CEO’s stuf their pockets?

And would someone please explain to me why Joe Lieberman is a Democrat considering that many of his views are to the right of Bush?

Let your computer help researchers!

Folding @ Home is free software from Stanford Univ. Download it, and your computer starts crunching numbers in the background, workiing on protein folding sequences.

This is distributed computing, which means that tens of thousands of computers are running the same program simultaneously, working on different data sets - which gives researchers access to computing power they could not get otherwise.

Folding @ Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously acheived. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

My copy is happily running in the background, seems quite well-behaved, and while I’m sleeping, it’s working.

my sniper news binge

my sniper news binge

After a two day sniper news binge on cable TV, I’ve sworn off.  There’s just not a whole lot of actual news reported, is there? Many talking heads explain it to us - when they aren’t squabbling among themselves, that is - but little useful hard news. And when there is some, it gets over-analyzed to death.

Another thing. Today they announced the sniper said “No child is safe”. Yet not one talking head / terrorist expert / psychologist gave advice to parents on how to cope with this. Not one. They weren’t even asked the question! I mean, what is up with that???

After an hour or so watching the omnipresent sniper news, filled with dire warnings for the future, anyone would get twitchy. The mood set by this news is ever increasing fear.

So, I turned the TV off. Better to get news via the Net. More restful. More realistic too.

Real IRA splits, one faction…

Real IRA splits, one faction warns of future violence

The Real IRA split from the IRA over the peace process in Northern Ireland. Now it appears they are having an internal split.

There was further evidence of a split in the Real IRA yesterday when one faction said it carried out a bomb attack on a police station and vowed to continue violence, in defiance of some members who want to end the terror campaign

For those confused, check this Brief Northern Ireland history, <via Slugger O’Toole>
