Parasites Go for Macho Males

Parasites may be biased: a new study suggests that tiny, disease-carrying critters may have a distinct preference for males. This preferential treatment results in higher death rates for the susceptible males.

Male machismo may be the reason for this increased attraction. Parasites might be attracted to the larger body size, or higher levels of testosterone in males may depress their immune systems.
