Donkey Mountain wonders, as I do, if our social contract is breaking down and do we care about the country as a whole anymore?
Will things continue to further fracture and atomize, with rival factions howling at each other, until inevitable violence breaks out? Then things could really go off the tracks. Revolutionary fervor sounds very stirring until you realize the Arab Spring turned out rather badly and revolutions generally end up with lots of dead people and smashed economies.
It’s just a trashed beach. However it is indicative of a society that increasingly doesn’t care the common good. United we stand, divided we fall. A history teacher once said, “When compromise breaks down, war breaks out.” The same holds true for societies.
This what my home looks like after the 4th of July. The people who did this were not trailer trash or ignorant lumpenproles. They were, for the most part, well-off white suburbanites from the Bay Area
When given half a chance they immediately become Visigoths.
