I agree with Carter. The prosecution was overly ambitious (as well as almost incompetent, like with their “star witness” who bolstered the defense case instead.) It doesn’t matter if you think Zimmerman is a dirt bag. Was the killing a deliberate act and not self-defense were the sole issues.
There was no evidence that showed Zimmerman guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in terms of those narrow legal issues. In a trial, it’s not what we think of the defendant, it’s what can be proven.
“I think the jury made the right decision based on the evidence presented, because the prosecution inadvertently set the standard so high that the jury had to be convinced that it was a deliberate act by Zimmerman, that he was not at all defending himself,” said Carter.
But who gives a shit about that? Argumentation like this simply promotes and excuses an open season on profiling black youth…That you want to roll over like this is bizarre(and nauseating). The kid was killed because he was black. That was the core rationale behind the whole tragic episode…and Zimmerman pursued and killed him because he was black.
That’s why people are so angry. That’s not a justifiable excuse to pursue and kill someone.
To argue that it was the right decision based “on the evidence presented” is an argument that the US court system –which incarcerates blacks at almost six times the rate for white men — is benign and is not influenced by issues of race.
Seriously, what planet are you on? So these people out there protesting and angry are all dead wrong and misguided and don’t know their law books according to Bob Morris…What they need to do is to embrace the verdict in good faith.
Read Jeralyn at Talk Left. She’s a defense lawyer and progressive at Talk Left. I thought as you did until I read her on the Zimmerman trial. There have been several big cases in the past she blogged about that I was sure she was completely wrong about only to discover later she was spot on. I’ve learned to pay attention to her.
