Thousands see this house every day driving north on I-280 from San Jose to San Francisco. It’s called the Flinthouse House.
The Flintstone House is a free-form, single-family residence in Hillsborough, California[1] overlooking, and best seen from the Eugene A. Doran Memorial Bridge on Interstate 280.[2][3] It was designed by architect William Nicholson and built in 1976 as an experiment in new building materials, in the form of a series of domes. It was constructed by spraying shotcrete onto steel rebar and wire mesh frames over inflated balloons. Originally off-white in color, it was repainted a deep orange in the mid 2000s. The house contains three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
I’ve always thought of it as the “Homer Simpson House” because of the shape, and the original color was closer to Simpson-Yellow. That bridge is something of an architectural marvel itself, when you see it from below.
Also, the bikepath that runs along the reservoir on the other side of the bridge is a real treat. Going north to south it’s an eight mile downhill, perfectly graded. Someday, if we make it, there’ll be an all-downhill bike trail from SF to San Jose running along the backside of the coastal range. I figure it’ll take four or five elevators along the way to do it.
That reservoir was formed by the San Andreas Fault, which is directly beneath it!
