Security expert Bruce Schneier frequently says that our “solution” to security threats is simply to react to whatever the last threat was. Someone tried to turn their shoes into a bomb well then, make travelers take off their shoes at security checkpoints. This does little to make anyone safer since the next threat probably won’t be with shoes.
Having armed guards and teachers at schools is also just reacting to the last threat. A potential school shooter could now just target the guards first or plant a bomb. Then there’s a potential huge liability risk with having guns at schools, especially if the all guards and teachers aren’t well-trained, which they almost certainly won’t be.
Instead, we need to look for root causes and real solutions

“In general I don’t think that the solution to safety in schools is putting an armed guard because for it to be really effective in my view, from a law enforcement perspective, you have to have an armed guard at every classroom. Because if you just have an armed guard at the front door then what if this guy had gone around to the side door? There’s many doors in and out of schools… I don’t necessarily think having an armed guard outside every classroom is conducive to a positive learning environment.”
Ironically, it’s becoming apparent that the NRA doesn’t seem to understand how guns work.
