Sir Douglas Quintet drummer Johnny Perez passes

Despite their name, the Sir Douglas Quintet were from San Antonio TX and combined Mexican styles of music with rock and roll. They had a sound uniquely their own, rooted in blues and Tejano. They’ve long been one of my all-time favorite bands.

Johnny Perez came out of San Antonio as the drummer of the 1960s band Sir Douglas Quintet, which had hits with ‘She’s About a Mover” and “Mendocino.”

He died Tuesday.

Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers from Sir Doug later joined with Freddy Fender and Flaco Jim̩nez to form the Texas Tornados, who were also amazingly good РTex-Mex soul.
