Despite their name, the Sir Douglas Quintet were from San Antonio TX and combined Mexican styles of music with rock and roll. They had a sound uniquely their own, rooted in blues and Tejano. They’ve long been one of my all-time favorite bands.
Johnny Perez came out of San Antonio as the drummer of the 1960s band Sir Douglas Quintet, which had hits with ‘She’s About a Mover” and “Mendocino.”
Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers from Sir Doug later joined with Freddy Fender and Flaco Jiménez to form the Texas Tornados, who were also amazingly good – Tex-Mex soul.
