BrightFarms, which designs, builds and manages greenhouses, is dedicated to producing food locally. They have just announced plans to build a huge hydroponic greenhouse on the roof of a former Navy warehouse in Brooklyn.
“Brooklyn was an agricultural powerhouse in the 19th century, and it has now become a local food scene second to none,” said Paul Lightfoot, the chief executive of Bright Farms. “We’re bringing a business model where food is grown and sold right in the community.”
The greenhouse could occupy as much as 100,000 square feet, which would make it the largest rooftop farm in the United States, and possibly the world. Construction will begin this Fall and the first harvest is expected next Spring.
Here’s a video showing how their greenhouses work.
All this reminded me of the Drifters song.
