Some years ago, a friend booked Etta James at the Park Plaza in downtown L.A. The audience was primarily alt- and punk, edgy and cynical. Most knew about her but had never seen her perform.
People were slack-jawed by the end of her performance. She tore the place up. It was astonishing.
