Jill Stein, Green Party candidate for President, is a genuine and outspoken progressive. Naturally liberals will be all in a dither about whether to vote for someone who articulates the issues well and wants real change or delude themselves into thinking the Democratic Party won’t punch them in the face and betray them again after voting for Obama. Really, only a liberal would find this choice confusing.
“Just because Obama claims to be a liberal and to support Occupy Wall Street doesn’t mean he’s not pro Wall Street,” Stein told me in an interview this weekend. “Look at who he brought into his inner circle from the very beginning – Wall Street insiders like Tim Geithner, Larry Summers and William Daley.”
Stein calls for the re-enactment of the much-maligned (and feared) Glass-Steagall Act, which separated commercial and investment banking between 1933 and 1999, and the prosecution of what she calls “Wall Street crooks.” She believes that Obama failed to take strong action at the incipience of his term, choosing instead to “protect criminals” (in her words), and noting that the President opposed taking legal action against mendacious banking executives who cost Americans billions of dollars.
Being a liberal myself, I think you may be confusing liberal with “die-hard Democratic party booster (for life)”. Emphasis on the booster they sit in. You could make the same mistake saying “progressive”, instead, so I get your point. 🙂
I saw her name come up for the Greens last week and posted to a couple of groups asking if anyone knew anything about her. Given the responses? Name recognition may be an issue. And if they do not even know her name there is a good chance they don’t know where she stands on the issues.
Interestingly enough, this is the kind of candidate that may just move the majority of OWS supporters. And really piss of the Dems trying to co-opt OWS.
I am just waiting for the BOTH parties AND the corporate media to figure out they may need to try and make her look crazy with stupid and meaningless shit.
In a state like Connecticut, where unaffiliated voters make up almost exactly 50% of the registered voters (and that is expected to increase if trends continue), the two party addicts might get some wake up calls if they continue on and the Greens have credible candidates that get some serious breaks here and there.
Well, yes, I was being deliberately snarky. Stein is the best candidate the Greens have had in years (including Nader.) I hope she gets serious traction.
And if she does, expect massive slimes at her from establishment Democrats.
