Marine techie: Drop the Mother Of All Bombs down the leaking well

Use a 21,000-pound megamunition to generate a king-sized shock wave that would force those leaking pipes on the seabed shut.

Deploying the GBU-43 MOAB — known as the “Massive Ordnance Air Burst” or “Mother of All Bombs” — would be “proven, safe and ‘green,'” Gayl tells our pal David Axe, of War Is Boring. The bomb consumes all its own fuel, after all. And it’s not a nuclear weapon, like the one the Russians allegedly used to shut down out-of-control wells.

Could work. But what if it caves in or creates ruptures in the sea floor? Oopsie. What then? A bigger bomb?

  1. I like the idea of a bomb but not the target. Perhaps they should drop one on each of the big three. Exxon, Chevron and BP. 🙂 It won’t help this leak but would be a great preventative measure.

Honestly this sort of idea is the kind of idea that gets us into these messes to begin with. No one thinks of cause and effect or the results of their actions. It’s no different than BP having a useless remediation process because they idiotically believed this kind of catastrophe would never happen.

  2. Gee, since they couldn’t blow up the radioactive desert floor of the Nevada Test Site, maybe they could test Divine Strake down there. Or in BP HQ.
