Underground data center to help heat Helsinki

Hundreds of servers will be located underground in bwdrock beneath Helsinki. The prodigious heat from them will be captured and used in the cit’s netwqork of warm-water pipes for home heating.

“It is perfectly feasible that a quite considerable proportion of the heating in the capital city could be produced from thermal energy generated by computer halls,” said Juha Sipila, project manager.

This is a double win, because then the servers don’t need nearly as much air conditioning to keep them cool.
