Sounds like a DoS attack on their web server front. If the iPhone app and other pop-like apps can still get at it, then the servers are fine. The web interface on the other hand could be benig attacked, or have some DNS issue. 😛
Google just posted this on the GMail blog “We’ve fixed the issue, and Gmail should be back up and running as usual. We’re still investigating the root cause of this outage, and we’ll share more information soon” which is certainly a bit cryptic
