Nine of the ten top countries in the New Economics Foundations “Happy Planet Index”, a measure of both environmental impact and prosperity, are in Latin America. However I am not quite convinced by the figures. Colombia comes in at number six on the index out of 143 countries…yet death squads commonly clear peasants from the land for biofuels. Doesn’t sound that good a place to me.
But may be I am just one of those old fashioned left greens who worries about little things like human rights and the environment?
Who are the happy ones, an elite ruling class or the entire populace? Because if it’s just the elites, then in a very real and deep sense, their prosperity is not sustainable (or even real) in the long term.
Costa Rica gets it though. They topped the list and don’t even have an army.
