  1. Rep. Charles Rangel said last year, “I don’t see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft. I think to do so is hypocritical.” With verbal support from Pelosi, the Congressman (who happens to be black) made the point that under the current system, those going to Iraq are disproportionately low-income and minorities. According to Pelosi, a draft would encourage “shared sacrifice.” But she ruled out considering the draft this session. So much for shared sacrifice.

Economist Charles Wheelan also suggested that a draft would cause people to think twice about supporting the war. If they and/or their children risked going, they might be less inclined to send troops. (See http://finance.yahoo.com/expert/article/economist/8060)

  2. People are already dying in a senseless war based on lies. A draft would force people of all classes to evaluate what their kids are going to die for. If the Kennedys and Bushs risked as much as the Washingtons and Garcias, do you think we’d be in Iraq? I think the nation would’ve been a lot more critical in its analysis.
