The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the deity of a parody religion founded in 2005 by Oregon State University physics graduate Bobby Henderson to protest against the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education to require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to biological evolution.
In an open letter sent to the education board, Henderson professes belief in a supernatural Creator called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which resembles spaghetti and meatballs. He furthermore calls for the “Pastafarian” theory of creation to be taught in science classrooms, essentially invoking a reductio ad absurdum argument against the teaching of intelligent design.
I believe the Kansas State Board of Education has finally been dragged kicking and screaming into at least the 1800’s, so the Noble Truths espoused by FSM are being used to attack other examples of junk science.
I’ve been following this since very near its conception (and have the fish-like car emblem to prove it). There are lots of people following this now, to the point that it’s got a match to just about every kooky religious thing out there. I’m sure you’ve heard of “The Bible in Lego”, but have you seen the “Lego Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monsterâ€ÂÂ? Yes, it exists, along with screen savers, flash games, backgrounds, and the like. I expect they’ll have tax-exempt status soon at the rate they’re going.

It is entirely plausible that there could be a supreme intelligence behind Creation. Whether that is a guy on a cloud, or something from Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee, pratitya samputpada (dependent origination), or my dog, is open to debate. (So label be an Arf-stafarian!) The nature of that Intelligence is a religious matter that has no place in public schools.
