  1. The problem for Israel is that this latest episode of strategic carnage puts their whole operation under scrutiny.
Already here in Australia the general outrage against Israel is rebooting the anti-war movement which has been floundering for some time.
This is bad PR — and I doubt that Israel will recover from the consequences in the face of world opinion. Similarly the determination of the US government to support Israel unconditionally feeds onto what people think the Bush administration’s aims are in Iraq.
That the Arab regimes have sat on their hands throughout all this sours them the more from their citizenry and no doubt feeds the number of recruits volunteering for Hezbollah type outfits.
But also what is starkly played out is that this so called “war on Terrorism” has tried to foster a generic threat when it is obvious that those outfits that are supposed to part of the axis of evil grow out of actual political conditions with real anger shared on a mass scale.
In terms of realpolitick Sunday’s attack in Beirut on the UN embassy is clear statement of what the world is beginning to think of all the peace and care rhetoric on offer from the United Nation.
So in many ways the perspective unravelling now is in no one’s control and it is clear that the rabid terrorism of Israel is going to have major consequences that may not be to Zionism’s or imperialism’s preference.
