LA Times 5-part series on the crisis in the seas. Text, photos, videos. This is superb reporting and analysis.
Part 1. A primeval tide of toxins
Runoff from modern life is feeding an explosion of primitive organisms. This ‘rise of slime,’ as one scientist calls it, is killing larger species and sickening people.
Altered Oceans is one of the best presentations of a serious environmental problem I have ever seen in a
mass-media format- kudos to the LA Times and author Ken Weiss! Hope it has a profound, life altering effect
on many people.
These article’s paint a dismal picture of the effects of using our waterways and oceans as an effluent
receptical- especially untreated or improperly treated sewage. There is a good resource for bioremediation
technology at http://oceanarks.org and it’s enterprize off-shoot group, http://toddecological.com
These two groups are envolved in natural sewage treatment, wetlands restoration, and land runoff filtration
and they have links to many other such groups.
We need surcharges on all fertilizers and subsidies on all sewage treatment upgrades to minimise slime production……………
