We don’t need no stinkin’ Constitution

The Shredding of Liberty.

AP: Court: ‘Dirty Bomb’ Suspect Can Be Held. A federal appeals court Friday sided with the Bush administration and reversed a judge’s order that the government either charge or free “dirty bomb” suspect Jose Padilla. The three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that the president has the authority to detain a U.S. citizen closely associated with al-Qaida.

The court’s ruling says Congress had the power to give the president dictatorial powers — to shred the Constitution at a whim and deny all rights to someone suspected of being a bad guy.

The judge who wrote this awful decision is on Bush’s short list for the Supreme Court. John Roberts, the likely next chief justice, has written at least one ruling that cedes dictatorial powers to the president.

Where is Congress? The Republicans, who once thought liberty was worth preserving, are applauding. The Democrats, who should be fighting for liberty, are simple cowards.

I fear for my country today.
