Miss Monica was in Rome last month for a week vacation. She reports being treated rudely and brusquely – when she spoke English. As a test, she switched to speaking Spanish and suddenly everyone was friendly and helpful. But when her Spanish failed her and she had to revert to English, people instantly became hostile.
