Researchers at Wake Forest University have developed plastic light bulbs that “match the solar spectrum perfectly”, are shatterproof, flicker-free, inexpensive, contain no mercury, produce virtually no heat, and last for years. They perfected an existing technology called field-induced polymer electroluminescent to create the light. Plus, they can be made in virtually any shape.
A “corporate partner” is already on board, and Carroll says that his plastic bulbs could be available as soon as 2013.
Some LEDs now match natural light too but are expensive. It’s looking more and more like compact florescent light bulbs will be a transitional product as LEDs and FIFELs take over the market.
