“The bed is dead”, says Ron Barth of Resource Furniture. To Barth, the idea of occupying a room just to house a bed is archaic. This is because Barth sells beds that are so far beyond the traditional Murphy Bed, it’s awkward to even bring up the term.

While nice for small spaces, all the “beds” shown look super-uncomfortable. Really, you’re spending 1/4 to 1/3 of your life in a bed. It should be comfortable. Not to mention the fact that older people would have problems in later life opening/closing said beds. Or the fact that you have 0 privacy in said bedroom-less homes.
The beds are counter-balanced and apparently open easily. But good point, they aren’t exactly California Kings, are they?
I think it’s a great idea and considering how much wasted space is not used in a typical house and how small some apartments can be if you can’t afford a lot per month for rent, so I welcome the idea of space savers like that. I’d like to see a bed, desk, couch combo that comes up from the floor. Also yes, a California King size bed would be preferable over a twin or a queen.
