Wind energy, obstacles in the US

The Oil Drum

Obstacle 1: Wind energy is dependent on large subsidies.

All renewable energy is. Most big wind and solar farms are backed in some way by the government.

Obstacle 2: Wind energy is more variable than electricity produced by fossil fuels and nuclear.

This is also true for solar. Variable power requires a much smarter grid as well as energy storage. We don’t have that now. Instead, “we’re a superpower with a Third World grid.”

Several of the other obstacles also include the inadequacy of our grid.

  1. I still think magnetic generators are the key to our energy problems. We wouldn’t need to worry about smart grids, grid capacity, subsidies, rising energy costs, etc.
