Solar power heats Fairbanks, Alaska home in winter

“You wouldn’t believe how many engineers have told me in the past year that it’s impossible,” Thorsten Chlupp said of the fossil-fuel free system. “I already know I need to build an outdoor swimming pool because I have too much heat.”

The system stores excess heat in a 14-by-8 foot water tank. This combined with a masonry heater composed of river rocks, produces enough energy to heat the home when the sun isn’t shining during December and January.
