Poor whites most discriminated against in elite college admissions

An exhaustive study by Princeton University, No Longer Separate, Not Yet Equal: Race and Class in Elite College Admission and Campus Life, polling thousands of college student enrollments at elite universities shows a decided bias against poor Whites as well as Asians and for Blacks and Latinos. And don’t be joining 4-H or Future Farmers of America to impress the admittance board. They’ll downgrade you for participating for such foolishly non-elite achievements instead.

Russell Nieli, also at Princeton, reviews the book.

How diversity punishes Asians, poor Whites and lots of others

Asians, unlike blacks and Hispanics, receive no boost in admissions. Indeed, the opposite is often the case, as the quota-like mentality that leads college administrators to conclude they may have “too many” Asians.

When lower-class whites are matched with lower-class blacks and other non-whites the degree of the non-white advantage becomes astronomical: lower-class Asian applicants are seven times as likely to be accepted to the competitive private institutions as similarly qualified whites, lower-class Hispanic applicants eight times as likely, and lower-class blacks ten times as likely. These are enormous differences and reflect the fact that lower-class whites were rarely accepted to the private institutions

This echoes Joe Bageant‘s Deer Hunting With Jesus. Dispatches from America’s Class War, which I reviewed in June 2007. It deals with how poor whites, especially southerners, get pissed on and insulted by elites, have been abandoned by the Democratic Party, and enthusiastically courted by Republicans – who get their votes almost by default. What a blown opportunity for the Left. Instead of alienating poor whites, the Left needs to listen to what they’re saying.

Bageant’s new book, Rainbow Pie: A Redneck Memoir, will be released shortly.
