Texas town installs huge sodium-sulfur battery as backup power

Presidio, Texas is going online with BOB (Big Old Battery.) It’ll store 4 MW of power up to eight hours and help prevent blackouts when their aging transmission line goes down. In fact, it can power the entire town. It’s also an excellent example of what our grid needs, the ability to store power from renewable energy.

That sounds good to us, as long as utility companies don’t simply lean on the batteries as a technological crutch to avoid giving the power grid its much-needed makeover.
