How to get a free credit report

annualcreditreport.com

Use AnnualCreditReport.com. This was set up by the FTC and guarantees you will get a genuinely free report.

From the FTC

AnnualCreditReport.com is the ONLY authorized source to get your free annual credit report under federal law. The Fair Credit Reporting Act guarantees you access to a free credit report from each of the three nationwide reporting agencies — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion — every twelve months. The Federal Trade Commission has received complaints from consumers who thought they were ordering their free annual credit report, but instead paid hidden fees or agreed to unwanted services. Don’t be fooled by TV ads, email offers, or online search results. Go to the authorized source when you request your free report.

After you fill out the info, you can choose which of the big three you want reports from. I choose all three and found TransUnion had the best service and was the only one that would give me the report online without waiting. For an extra $7.95 you can get your actual FICO score, and this was clearly labeled as extra and not necessary to get the credit report.

We will be moving yet again soon so I needed this for the next place we rent. It appears the wandering gypsies that are Bob and Sue, after moving from LA to CT in 2007, then to SF in 2008, are headed back to good ole SoCal. W00t!

  1. Does credit matter anymore?

    Really.

Exciting Times (as opposed to Interesting), these. To watch, participate, as history unfolds rather than read of it from some dusty old tome… We are witnessing the statistically inevitable failure of a ten thousand year old socio-economic model doomed, condemned, to failure at its inception. Blood-thirsty paternalistic, monotheistic usury has failed.
