Two musicians who didn’t take the flight

buddy holly poster

The plane crash was fifty years ago today.

Waylon Jennings was Buddy Holly’s bass player and has said Holly was his mentor.

Jennings told CMT.com that the brutal crash left scars that still haunted him 40 years after Holly’s death. Jennings never came to terms with his last words to Holly, the joking refrain, “I hope your ol’ plane crashes.”

Dion DiMucci almost took that fateful flight too.

When Buddy came to me, I thought about the $36.00 price. My parents paid $36.00 a month for rent back in the Bronx. I just couldn’t bring myself to spend the same amount on a 45 minute plane ride, so I told him no.
