Hero of the Day. Utah student stops BLM land auction

Tim DeChristopher

A Univ. of Utah student has deliberately sabotaged federal Bureau of Land Management oil and gas lease sales for land near national parks by winning bids for land he has no intention of paying for.

Tim DeChristopher, 27, faces possible federal charges after winning bids totaling about $1.8 million on more than 10 lease parcels that he admits he has neither the intention nor the money to buy — and he’s not sorry.

By his actions, he has insured there will be no drilling on the land anytime soon.
