"they, as libertarians or conservatives, would be completely pissed about illegal spying, endless wars and fiscal insanity associated with the neocons."

"We" are. The neo-cons embody the absolute worst of liberalism-- and very little that could be called conservative. GWB is just another big-spending liberal who wants to legislate people's lives.

Maybe I should have said "more traditional" - but "normal" denotes that they, as libertarians or conservatives, would be completely pissed about illegal spying, endless wars and fiscal insanity associated with the neocons.

the GOP is not the party it used to be. Many of their supporters have watched their leadership become a group of insane fools.

Hooray: I'm a "normal" conservative! There are so few of us left that until now we didn't even have a name... which begs the question: what is "normal"?

Honestly? I think it is being done with the backbone Ron Paul supporters, coupled with truly disgruntled "normal" conservatives dienchanted with neocons. There is really nothing left for libertarians in the republican party except Ron Paul.

Put him on a ticket and he divides the GOP base a bit. Throw Bloomberg on that ticket and there goes some more of the GOP base that honestly like conservatism.

Now... Add in Bob Barr. Even more of the GOP base gets split.

If this happens there could be a lot of opportunity for 3rd parties to develop and reshape the political landscape. And that would truly be a good thing.

The more viable political parties there are, the more expensive and harder it is for corporations to corrupt the system, IMHO. Not that they still won't try.
