Florida. Hundreds seeking housing vouchers turned away.

Police in riot gear forced “a mass of women nursing babies, pushing strollers” to leave after applications ran out. Some got in line nine hours before the doors opened.

Such demand for housing vouchers is almost certainly a result of the cratering real estate market and soaring foreclosure rate in Florida.

Tight US immigration forces outsourcing: Bill Gates

US high-tech companies are being forced to outsource more jobs overseas because of outdated restrictions on immigration, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates told Congress Wednesday.

Gates, echoing a longstanding complaint from the technology sector, told a congressional panel that the US immigration system “makes attracting and retaining high-skilled immigrants exceptionally challenging for US firms.”

Like it or not, the world is increasingly flat, and if the US erects barriers to immigration and trade, then it will simply go elsewhere.

My brain just exploded

That’s what Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Netscape, says about this new technology.

From the YouTube description. it’s “a neckband that intercepts nerve signals allows you to talk on the phone without emitting a sound.” Yes, you read that right.

People with ALS can now communicate using it. So far it has a small vocabulary, but will be expanding soon. Hey, now you can talk on your cell phone in public without speaking.

Andreessen adds, “I have a feeling that someday, this may be up there with ‘Come here, Watson, I need you.’”

More from New Scientist. It’s developed by The Audeo.

Dave Riley comes out

So it’s more than coming out. You can’t do it alone and certainly not in private.

And after all these years I am still a practising Leninist. Outwardly I look the same, but when I’m on a roll I’m at it hammer and sickle.

It’s true that we tend to be shunned in polite society. I admit that. There are some that pretend we aren’t there, that we somehow don’t exist just so that their sleep won’t be disturbed. Ours, unfortunately, is the politics that is not supposed to speak its name.

Well… at least he’s not, y’know, one of those crazed anarchists….

GE prints Organic Light Emitting Diodes

GE OLED
OLEDs are even more energy efficient than regular LEDs. And now GE, after four years, has invented a way to print them newspaper style, quickly and inexpensively too.

This could be a paradigm shift, a whole new way of doing light. It often takes a huge corporation with immense deep pockets to do the R&D necessary to develop products like this. GE is also an industry leader in wind turbines.
