Like many of the predictions that appear in the press, I fail to follow the science on this one. Even 100 meters of water weighs little compared to the density of the continental lithosphere, and that is light compared to the sea floor which, being denser, subducts under the continental shelf. A geologist friend remarked to me the other day that I was used to reactions that occur in area of extremely low pressure. I thought he was talking about near-vacuum conditions, but instead he meant pressures at the surface or within a few hundred meters of seawater.
And, in any event, wouldn’t the eruption of volcanos cool off the warming???
